Functions: Talk about pollution and environmental protection .
Teaching aims: Review of conjunctions The teacher may check that Ss understand how to correctly use the conjunctions before having them complete the activity.
Target language:
Words:shark,cruel,harmful,chain, ecosystem, industry, law, scientific, afford.
Expressions:be harmful to, at the top of, the food chain, take part in, turn off, pay for, take action
Sentences: No scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health.
The number of some kinds of sharks have fallen be over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
Teaching methods: Pair work, Group work, Role play
Teaching steps:
Step 1: Lead-in
Give the students a picture about Over the dome to lead them to discuss the pollution.
Step 2: Discussion
Let the students come up with some solutions to cut down the pollution.
T: How do you think can we do to reduce air pollution/ocean pollution?
Step 3: Presentation
What do you know about sharks? (Talk about the food chain)
Step 4: While reading
A. Let the students read the passage, match each paragraph with the main idea.
B. Read the first paragraph, judge the statements.

3.What is the current situation about sharks?
4.How many sharks are caught and traded every year?
D. Read the third paragraph, answer the questions.
1.Who are taking actions to save the sharks?
2. How can government help?
Step 5. Discuss how to save the sharks.
Step 6. Let the students retell the story.
Step 7. After reading
Write a letter to the city major about the problems and your suggestions.
