She wrote many sonnets, a type of 14 line poem, the same as Shakespeare did. § Elizabeth and her husband Robert had a great love affair, almost like a movie. Browning was six years younger than his wife. They ran away to Italy to get married. My Last Duchess § As is typical of Brownings poems,My Last Duchess is written as a dramatic monologue: one speaker relates the entire poem as if to another person present with him.? This means the poem is written in the “voice’ of a character rather than the voice of the poet. §The poem is set during the late Italian Renaissance It first appeared in 1842 in Brownings Dramatic Lyrics . Background What is the poem about ? The starting point is a portrait on the wall。The visitors has been sent to discuss a dowry, as the Duke is looking for a new wife - the next duchess. While they are talking the conversation turns to the portrait of the Duke’s dead wife. § The character --The Duke of Ferrara, And he is speaking to his visitors ( The count’s envoy ) about his dead wife - the Duchess. behind a curtain The picture is kept hidden Where the Duke can enjoy it by himself When the Duke draws back the curtain the envoy sees in the Duchess’expression: smile Strangers?like?you?that?pictured?countenance, The?depth?and?passion?of?its?earnest?glance, But?to?myself?they?turned?. ^^^^^^ When the Duchess was alive, the Duke could not control her smile and love for life and he considered her unfaithful.? It is thought that he poisoned her because of these suspicions.? For example, he seems jealous that he was not able to monopolize his former duches
