* APRs can be utilized with either a half or a full facepiece, which is similar to an SCBA mask except that air comes through a filtration cartridge or canister instead of from a bottle. Cartridges screw directly onto the inhalation ports of the face mask and are used most commonly in emergency situations. Canisters, with the larger filtering capacity, are connected to the face mask through an inhalation tube and are generally found at fixed facilities. For APRs, the atmospheric oxygen level must be above 19.5 percent, and the contaminant and its concentration must be known to determine the appropriate cartridge. Powered or pressurized air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are equipped with a fan that pushes air into the mask to provide a cool, slight positive pressure. * Air-line respirators utilize an umbilical hose, which runs from a stationary source of compressed air to a regulator and delivers clean, safe, positive pressure air to the mask. Although the respirators are lightweight and can supply an almost limitless amount of air, the hose cannot extend more than 91.4 m (300 ft) from the air supply. The hose has a tendency to become tangled and become contaminated, so an escape pack with a minimum 5-minute air supply is required. * * There are some specialized types of protective garments for specific hazard situations. Fire entry suits are designed to be worn for a short period of time. These suits can be worn for a short period of time for rescue or other special tasks. These suits will protect against 1500 degree total flame environment or 2000 degree radiant heat. Proximity suits are constructed of various types of materials with different types of construction. These suits are used in special operations where protection from intense heat or materials is needed. * Chemical protective clothing (CPC) is designed to protect the wearer from the harmful effects of chemicals.
