Friedmans arguments Managers should not pursue other social interests in the name of the company. The CEO has no right to give stockholders money away to charities; only stockholders themselves have the right (exception: CEO is the only owner of the company). Even if stockholders authorize CEO to do good in their names, the latter cannot do it as well as the government can do. The conclusion: just do your own business, pay the taxes, and leave the government care for the social interests. Discussion If stockholders agree to use the companys money to pursue social interests, and the CEO can prove that she/he is at least as competent as the government in doing good, do you still have a reason to stop the CEO from spending the money?
