Business Ethics Lecture 3: Employee rights Decison-making process Step 1: Establish the facts Did other plants pay benefits to their workers? What did this plant do last year? (Norms expectations) Did management tell workers the reason for canceling their benefits before doing it? Does the plant want to downsize its workforce? How is the job market going? Most workers chose to stay, because they accepted the managements explanation, or because they were afraid of not being able to find a job elsewhere? Step 2: Recognize the ethical issues The management emphasized in its announcement that there was no legal requirement on paying benefits and it didnt break any pre-existing contract. Does that mean its decision is ethical? Did it show enough respect to workers? Even if the aim of the management is to downsize the workforce, is it fair to push workers to leave this way? Step 3: Identify all relevant stakeholders and consider the stakes for each of them Whats the impact of the strike on employees, stockholders, customers, suppliers and the society as a whole? Step 4: Think about alternative choices What would you do if you are the manager: To explain or not to explain? Provide mooncake or money? Offer another choice besides accept or leave? Give workers a say on benefit-related issues? What would be the long-term effect of your choice on each stakeholder and on the whole plant? Step 5: Make your decision, and review it Cost-benefit analysis Any other reason to support your decision? Why you should treat employees well Utilitarian Awards and compensations would no doubt affect employees morale (士气) and productivity. Treat staff well, and dividends will follow. Michael J. Maguire.
