Step 1: Lead-in
T: In our whole life, we may have many dreams—We dream of possessing wealth, success, achievements, fame, health, happiness, position, power…but the most important in my mind is health.(right / wrong?)
S: Yes.
T: Without health, we would lose what we have. So we say first wealth is health. How can we keep health?(Let’s come to some examples)
T: What are they doing? Healthy or unhealthy?
T: From what we talked about just now, we can see—A truly healthy life is to develop a good habit; an unhealthy life is related to a bad habit. But in our daily life, there are many people who are developing a bad habit, which is harming their health, eg. Smoking is a bad habit.
Step 2 Warming up
T: From the propaganda pictures, we can see smoking is harmful. Why? (Pictures)
Ss: Because it is a waste of money.
it may cause fire.
it may cause air pollution.
it may be harmful to yourself.
it may do harm to others around you.
T: Though there are so many harmful effects, in our daily life, we can see a surprising fact that there are more and more smokers who tend to be younger and younger.
T: (Picture) Why do you think some adolescents start smoking?
Ss: Cool?
Curious?
Stressed?
Nervous?
Imitating the adults?
Feeling lonely or boring?
Releasing the stress?
Step 3 Reading
T: Perhaps there are various reasons for you to smoke, but for the health of yourself and others, you should try to get rid of the bad habit. How to achieve the goal? Today we will come to a new passage, in which you can learn about the different reasons for smoking, bad effects of smoking and some good advice on quitting smoking.(Let’s turn to Page 18 and come to “Advice From Grandad”).
