As a universal phenomenon, privacy exists in every culture. Different culture has different concepts of privacy and different ways to deal with it, which results in cultural crash and conflict unavoidably. Therefore, this thesis is dedicated to demonstrate the differences on Chinese and Western privacy and the causes. Since 1960s, people have studied privacy from different angles and different aspects, and agreed that privacy is restricted by society, culture and so on. Based on the previous study, this thesis uses examples to make a contrastive study on Chinese and Western privacy i.e. privacy reflected in personal information, territory, distance and space. Personal information includes privacy on economic status, age, marriage and sex, and territory involves privacy reflected in home, office and object territory. In addition, the difference in Chinese and Western privacy is manifested in distance and space. And then, the thesis analyzes the causes of the privacy differences with the knowledge of different privacy concepts, different context cultures and different cultural values from the perspective of culture. It aims at familiarizing English learners with cross-culture background, developing their cross-cultural awareness, and reducing unnecessary communication failures. Key words: privacy; contrastive study; culture; causes 摘要 随着全球化的进程，跨文化交际日益频繁。隐私是一种社会普遍现象，存在于各个文化中。由于对有着不同文化的人的隐私观念和处理方式不了解，在跨文化交际中就难免产生文化碰撞和文化冲突。所以，比较中西隐私观差异以求将跨文化交际冲突减少到最小就成了本文研究的主要目的。 从上个世纪六十年代起，人们就从不同角度、不同方面对隐私观作了系统的研究，并一致认为隐私观的存在离不开社会、文化等方面的限制。本文将在前人的研究基础上，结合实例，对中西隐私观在日常生活中的主要体现进行对比研究,研究发现这些差异主要体现在个人信息隐私、区域隐私、距离隐私与空间隐私四个方面。其中个人信息隐私主要包括经济状况、年龄、婚姻和性的隐私；区域隐私主要涉及家庭区域、办公区域以及私人物品区域的隐私。然后从文化的角度--隐私概念差异、价值取向和高低文化语境分析探讨这些隐私差异形成的原因。这有助于英语学习者了解和掌握跨文化交际隐私，减少不必要的交际失误。
