M eteorological Science and Technology ServiceCenter of Jiangxi Provincie, Nanchang 330046, China) Abs tract: W ith disastrousweather observation data from more than 80 meteorological stations in Jiangxi Province, synopic chart for recent 10 years and theChineseMeteorologicalDisasterDictionary, the spatiotemporaldistribution and clim ate character ofhail is analysed. Research show thathail frequency hashighly timevarying characteristics. Hail is prone to exist in spring season from M arch toM ay, and especially inApril thehail frequency is the largest. Hailmost likely takes place from afternoon to evening.H ail frequency is different for various geographical location, it occursmore inmountain area and plains andmountains junction area and the land near Poyang Lake, and less in other areas. H ail is caused by inverted trough on theground, secondly by cold fronts and cyclonewaves. Haildisas ter is not exactly consistentw ith hail frequency, there is a close relationship w ith crop conditions and the local e conomy. Haildefense division index function is constructed,
