MOMENT IN PEKING by Lin Yutang Chinese writer Born Oct. 10, 1895, Fujian province died March 26, 1976, Hong Kong studied in the U.S. and Europe In 1932 he established a highly successful Western-style satirical magazine of a type totally new to China Lin Yutang: Lin’s Academics studied at Saint Johns University in Shanghai bachelors degree study at Harvard University doctoral degree moving to France and eventually to Germany completed his requirements for a doctoral degree taught at Peking University English literature Lin’s Legacy My Country and My People (吾国与吾民)(1935) The Importance of Living (生活的艺术) (1937) Moment in Peking(京华烟云) (1939) Between Tears and Laughter (啼笑皆非) (1943) The Vermillion Gate (朱门) (1953) The Importance of Understanding (1960) The Chinese Theory of Art (1967) His many works represent an attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the East and the West. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times in the 1970s. Moment in Peking is an historical novel originally written in English by the Chinese American author Lin Yutang. The novel covers the turbulent events in China from 1900 to 1938 including the Boxer Uprising The Republican Revolution of 1911 the Warlord Era the rise of nationalism and communism, and the origins of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945. This novel is merely a story of... how certain habits of living and ways of thinking are formed and how, above all, men and women adjust themselves to the circumstances in this earthly life where men strive but gods rule. Main characters Yao Mulan (姚木兰) The protagonist of the story, Mulan, is from the wealthy Yao family. During the Boxer Rebellion she is kidnapped by bandits, and then rescued by the Tseng family; the two families thereafter become close friends.
