This is a two dimensional map rather than a one dimensional one as in the case of the wedge. Similarly to the wedge there is also a physical version of compensators shown here and one created by moving jaws (or better the MLC) on a megavoltage photon unit. This is called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and illustrated in the next slides. It is currently the topic of a lot of research and holds great promise for improved dose distributions in the target. Depending on the participants, the lecturer can decide to omit the following two slides. Similar information is also provided in the next lecture and in part 10 of the course.
