The Quaternary and the Tertiary Periods together form the Cenozoic Era. The Quaternary can be subdivided into two epochs: the Pleistocene (2.6 million years to ten thousand years ago) and the Holocene (ten thousand years ago to the present day). ;The Quaternary Period in Earth History: The Quaternary Period spans the last 2.6 million years of the Earths history. The Quaternary is an interval with dramatic and frequent changes in global climate. Warm interglacials alternated with cold ice ages. The Earth is right now entering a time of unusually warm climate. Significant and potentially rapid environmental changes could pose major challenges for human habitability.The expertise of Quaternary scientists is to interpret the changing world of the glacial ages and their impact on our planets surface environments. Quaternary palaeoclimatic investigations play a key role in the understanding of the possible future climate change on our planet. (INQUA) ;第四纪的突出特征是气候环境发生了剧烈频繁的变化，出现了冰期，出现了人类。??以有时也把第四纪称为人类纪（Anthropogene） ;二、第四纪科学的性质和任务 第四纪是地球演变的最新时期，第四纪科学是地球科学中最活跃的一个分支，它承袭了传统的地球科学，又与现代科学技术的许多新领域新进展紧密关联，从圈层相互作用到全球变化，从地学、生物学、气候学、天文学等自然科学到人类学、人文学和社会可持续发展， 当今人类社会面临的资源、能源、环境、灾害等许多问题无不与第四纪科学相关。解决这些重大问题是第四纪科学工作者责无旁贷的历史责任和社会责任。第四纪科学有时又被称为表层地球科学，其研究的走向是向着精细、集成、系统化和全球化发展。 ; ;
