What is an Argument? And why you should care. The first stage in critical thinking is argument identification.  Some of what people say and do is not argumentative – not everything is an argument. We must be able to distinguish the arguments from other types of expression.  So we have to be able to identify arguments. This is the first step in understanding them and deciding if we agree or not. Take a minute and come up with a definition of the word: Argument Look at your definition. Is it clear that we can use that definition to decide what is and what is not an argument? argument-noun 论据 argument, talking point 论点 argument, contention, thesis, issue, argumentation 争论 debate, controversy, argument, dispute, contention,  disagreement 理由 reason, grounds, ground, justification, why, argument 争执 dispute, argument, conflict, disagreement, feud, bust-up 议论 talk, discussion, argument, debate, dialogue,  conversation 立论 argument, position, line of reasoning Are these arguments?
