What is an Argument? And why you should care. The first stage in critical thinking is argument identification.  Some of what people say and do is not argumentative – not everything is an argument. We must be able to distinguish the arguments from other types of expression.  So we have to be able to identify arguments. This is the first step in understanding them and deciding if we agree or not. Take a minute and come up with a definition of the word: Argument Look at your definition.
