Have you ever been in a situation where you were considered “different” from everyone else? What happened? How did you feel? Segregation in the United States A system of racial segregation(种族隔离制度)arose soon after the American Civil War in most former slave states. In 1948, President Truman(杜鲁门总统)ordered to put an end to segregation in the armed forces and segregation of the races in public schools was banned in 1954. Southern antagonism toward desegregation continued into the 1960s, however. Most white schools remained totally segregated by the mid-1960s. In the 1970s, the federal government began to withhold federal funds from segregated schools and the Supreme Court expanded the fight when it ruled in 1976 that private, nonsectarian schools may not exclude black children because of their race.
