If meanin gful groups are the goal, the n the clusters should capture the n atural structure of the data. In some cases,however, cluster analysis is only a useful starting point for other purposes, such as data summarizati on. Whether for un dersta nding or utility, cluster an alysis has long played an importa nt role in a wide variety of ?elds: psychology and other social scie nces, biology,statistics, patter n recog niti on, in formatio n retrieval, machi ne lear ning, and data mining. There have been many applications of cluster analysis to practical problems. We provide some speci?c examples, organized by whether the purpose of the clustering is un dersta nding or utility. Clustering for Understanding Classes, or conceptually meaningful groups of objects that share com mon characteristics, play an importa nt role in how people an alyze and describe the world. In deed, huma n beings are skilled at dividi ng objects into groups (clusteri ng) and assig ning particular objects to these groups (classi?cati on).
