There are hundreds of organiza-tions involved in standards-setting, including trade associations such as the ISEA, profes-sional societies such as the ASSE, and other organizations such as ASTM that are strictly standardization bodies. To bring some order to this process, as well as some recognition to the standards developed by these diverse organizations, the developers themselves established and maintain the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI is the coordinator of standards in the US. It establishes a way for an organization to achieve broad consensus on a standard and get it widely recognized and used. It enables government recognition and acceptance of voluntary standards. And it serves to represent US interests in international standardiza-tion.
