Following are the problems need to be solved: Firstly, the background of the naturalism, Theodore Dreiser and his work. Secondly,the definition and features of naturalism on Sister Carrie, and then discussing the figures have these features. 2）Purpose and Significance of the Study The most important section in naturalism is determination, which stress human’s performances were decided by environment and heredity and won’t be transform by human’s will. Theodore Dreiser is one of the most influential American writers. His first novel Sister Carrie published in 1990, was regarded as forbidden book due to the social condition. But now the book becomes famous because of the naturalistic features in it. Theodore Dreiser is regarded as a pioneer of American naturalism. As representative naturalistic writer, Theodore Dreiser expresses naturalism’s feature in most of his work. Theodore Dreiser advocates truthful reflection of life in his novel.The thesis aims at three features of naturalism: environment, heredity , and extinct desire. Besides, naturalist writers pay more attention on detail description. Theodore Dreiser used a lot of naturalism in Sister Carrie, like the main characters’ food, clothes, furniture and debts. 3) Literature Review Theodore Dreiser was one of the most famous naturalist writers in America.
