Methodist卫理公会派教徒The History of MethodismOrigins The Methodist began in the mid-18th century as the Church of England.A small group of students, including John Wesley, Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, met on the Oxford University campus. They focused on Bible study, methodical(系统的) study of scripture(圣经) and living a holy life. They also founded the Holy Club at Oxford. In 1735, John and Charles Wesley went to America to teach the gospel(传播福音) to the American Indians in the colony of Georgia. In less than two years, the Holy Club disbanded. John Wesley returned to England and met with a group of clergymen he respected. After that, these clergymen (牧师)became popular. The nickname Methodists students had used against the Wesleys was revived. The followers became known as Methodists. These Methodists frequently visited the sick and the poor, as well as prisoners. Methodist preachers(牧师) were notorious(臭名昭著的) for their enthusiastic sermons(布道) and often accused of fanaticism(狂热). Because of this, they often be expelled from the church. However, many underclass people were deeply moved by his sermons and began to believe in Christianity. After American Independence,Methodism breaked away from Anglican(圣公会).Then it split into the Methodist Protestant Church(美普会),the Methodist Episcopal Church South(监理会),the Methodist Episcopal Church(美以美会)and so on.In 1939,these three church merged into todays the Methodist Church(卫理公会). First and Second Awakenings The First Great Awakening was a religious movement among colonials(殖民地)from 1730s to 1740s. The English Calvinist(加尔文主义) Methodist preacher George Whitefield(乔治·怀特菲尔德)travelled across the colonies and preached in a dramatic and emotional style. He acceptted everyone as his audience. The new style of sermons breathed new life into religion in America. People became passionately involved in their religion, rather than passively listening to discourse(论述). The Second Great Awakening was a nationwide wave of revivals from 1790 to 184
