Religion in Britain I. General Introduction of the three main world religions 1. Buddhism It was founded in the 6th century B.C. by Sakyamuni. Its doctrine is found in Buddhist Scripture. 2. Islam It was founded in the 7th century by Mohammed. The doctrine of Islam is found in “Quran”. 3. Christianity It came into being in A.D. 30 and its doctrine is the Holy Bible. II. Christian Church in Britain 1. The Anglican Church – Church of England A. It came into being during the European Reformation of 16th century. B. It is the most important denomination and it is the established church ,which means it represents the official state religion, having certain duties towards the State, and receiving certain privileges From it. C. Its temporal head is the Queen, and the 26 of its highest priests sit in the House of Lords. Difference between Roman Catholic Church and Church of England ? 1. Church of England has no strong central authority. VS Roman Catholics throughout the world recognize the supreme holy authority of the Pope in Rome and of the Church or priesthood in general, but the Anglican Church relies more on the Bible, which is not always easy to interpret, and leaves many questions to individual consciences. ? 2.
