22nd ITS World Congress, Bordeaux, France, 5–9 October 2015 Paper number ITS-2826 Modelling framework for transportation simulation and energy assessment 1* 1 1 1 Vadim Sokolov , Namwook Kim , Dominik Karbowski , Joshua Auld Abstract This paper introduces a new modelling framework for simulating transportation systems, with concentration on energy impacts of management and new vehicle technologies. It includes an integrated transportation system simulator and a powertrain simulator. For the transportation system we use agent-based POLARIS model. For the powertrain simulator we use AUTONOMIE, a tool funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Both are developed at Argonne National Laboratory. We demonstrate our approach by modelling a transportation corridor along a major highway. Two infrastructure scenarios are considered, unmanaged, when both trucks and cars use all the lanes of the highway and managed, under which one of the highway lanes is a dedicated lane for truck traffic that form platoons using adaptive cruise control technology. We provide the numerical results of the experiment at the end of the paper. We also present the impact of vehicle hybridization combined with automation on the energy consumption.
