This recommendation is based on the SparcServer and 9000 hardware being “proven solutions” as database servers, having high database server performance in “real world” and testing environments, and having high availability of current and future third party software. The HP 9000 box would most likely out-perform the SparcServer 1000 on CPU intensive processes. However, the SparcServer 1000 typically has a better overall price/performance ratio. At this point in time, we do not recommend the IBM RISC/6000 for Fidelity’s database server needs due primarily to its top-end performance limitations. In addition, we consider the Unisys 550 hardware a high risk purchase for the database server needs at Fidelity. Customized Fidelity benchmarking tests are recommended before this platform is considered. Hardware Platform Selection What are the most important considerations in selecting a hardware platform? Listed below (in order of importance) are what we will use to evaluate the database server issue for Fidelity Funding: 1. Proven Solution: Large installed base in similar environment 2. High Performance: Proven performance in similar environment 3. Availability of Third Party Software: Current and future third party software being developed for the platform 4. High Price/Performance: Proven performance in similar environment at a reasonable price Proven Solution A “proven solution” is considered a hardware and operating system platform that has a large installed base in a similar environment.
