5.9 Kubla Khan Introduction Kubla Khan, A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment • completed in 1797 and published in 1816 • composed one night after he experienced an opium-influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu • interrupted by a visitor and unfinished • consisting of 54 lines Kubla Khan • a poem about poetry • a fantastic description of the magnificent palace named pleasure-dome Analysis divided into three parts: • 1st part: line 1 to 11 give a description of the mysterious landscape in which the palace lies • 2nd part: line 12 to line 30 elaborate on the mysteriousness and gothicism of the landscape • 3rd part: line 31 to 54 focus on the poet’s wild imagination inspired by the landscape Kubla Khan Kubla Khan In Xanadu did Kubla Khan 忽必烈汗建立上都, A stately pleasure dome decree: 修起富丽的逍遥宫。 Where Alph, the sacred river, ran 那儿有神河阿尔浮, Through caverns measureless to man 流经深不可测的岩洞, Down to a sunless sea. 注入不见太阳的海中。 So twice five miles of fertile ground 那儿有十哩方圆的沃土, With walls and towers were girdled round: 城墙、高塔四面围绕, And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills 明媚的花园,曲折的小溪, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, 丁香、豆蔻芳华四溢, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. 树林像山丘一样古老, 环抱着阳光灿烂的草地。 But oh! that deep romantic chasm which 但沿着松柏苍苍的山坡 slanted 急转直下,却是悬崖深谷!
