 9.2 Narrowing Your Focus Kurt Vonnegut: • “Start as close to the end as possible.” A story is a very small, limited space. • “Use the time of a total stranger in such a way he or she will not feel the time was wasted.” Pick at least one important event,... and begin as close as possible to it in order to insure your story reaches it quickly and efficiently. How to narrow the focus? • When your story begins, something is already happening. The characters should already be involved in an event directly involved with the main goal of your story. ➢ examples: If your characters are on a journey, you should start close to the end. If they’re working on a business deal, it should be nearly negotiated.
