Unit 6 Chassis Along with the engine, car body, electrical system and the chassis makes up a vehicle. The chassis is the framework of the vehicle and supports all of the major components. The main components of the chassis include the drive train, the steering system, the brake system and the suspension system. Text A Drive Train The drive train transmits power from the engine to the drive wheels. Commonly there are four basic drive train designs: front-engine front-wheel drive vehicle (FF), front-engine rear-wheel drive vehicle (FR), rear-engine rear-wheel drive vehicle (RR), and 4-Wheel Drive (4WD). Generally the drive train consists of the clutch, the transmission, the propeller shaft, the final drive, the differential, and the drive shafts, shown as Fig.6.1: Text A Drive Train The clutch is a device which connects or disconnects the engine and the transmission. The clutch used in most light vehicle applications is a diaphragm spring clutch. It mainly consists of the clutch disc, the pressure plate, the diaphragm spring, the release lever and bearing. The transmission changes the speed and the torque of the engine by meshing different gears. It is composed of many gears and shafts. The propeller shaft transmits power from the transmission to the final drive. The main components of the propeller shaft include the universal joint and the drive shaft. The final drive is used to increase the torque that is transmitted by the transmission and also changes the direction of the torque. The differential distributes torque in equal proportions to the drive wheels and allows the drive wheels rotate at different speed when the vehicle turns or drives in rough roads.
