How to Sell Combs to Monks Once upon a time, there were two salesmen called Zhang San and Li Si who were busy with selling their combs out. One day, they came to a temple by chance. Zhang was disappointed when he saw the monks walking around with their shining bald head, so he went back. However, Li tried to persuade the monks to buy his combs with his wits. Li went to meet the Buddhist abbot and warned the abbot seriously: “Respectable abbot, do you know that you have done irreverence to the Buddha?” The abbot was confused and asked why Li said that. Li explained: “There were so many pilgrims come to the temple from a great distance to worship the Buddha with a sincere heart. How could you let them worship with disheveled hair? Doesn’t it a kind of irreverence to the Buddha?” In this way, Li sold out 10 3-yuan combs to the abbot without a hitch. After knowing the successful business of Li, Zhang also wanted to sell out his combs with his strong business acumen. He asked a worker to make 100 combs with a little cute monk image and the name of the temple on each. Early in the next morning, he went to the temple again. With the consideration that the abbot must want the temple to be famous in order to attract more pilgrims, Zhang advised him to present the combs to the pilgrims as a souvenir. In this way, the pilgrims would praise the temple’s humanized serving behavior, and then the temple would be well-known. Zhang also succeeded in peddling his 100 combs at the price of 5 yuan for each. Li noticed the great commercial opportunity in the temple, so he went to the temple with 1000 combs a month later. The combs were divided into two kinds. The first type of combs had the letters “merit comb”, while the others with letters “wit comb”.
