These frequencies should be used by ships, aircrafts or survival crafts when seeking assistance in the maritime mobile service. They should be used for the distress call and distress traffic and for calls preceded by either the urgency signal or the safety signal. Passage 9 2,182 kHz is used as the international distress and safety frequency and also for international call and reply at the present time. However with the full implementation of GMDSS 2,182 kHz is likely to be used exclusively for distress and safety purposes.
