1 Test purposes 2 Test specimens 2.1 Scale of specimen For the test, reduced scale specimen is adopted in the test considering the loading capacity and assembly space of test machine as well as the gauge of existing available steel tube. The reduced scale is approximately 0.57. 2.2 Dimension of specimen 1) In order to investigate the performance of diagrid steel tube with longitudinal seam weld staggering equal to 0°, the tube with longitudinal seam weld staggering equal to 90° are taken into account as such a comparison that it is more evident to find out the effect of different arrangements of the longitudinal seam and girth weld. As a result, two steel tubes in all will be fabricated for the test and the specimens are categorized into two major types, as shown in Table 2.1. 2) According to the requirements of SBC, the steel tubes (φ457×8mm φ457×16mm) with longitudinal seam weld are chosen for the test specimens. What’s more, the specimen will be butt-welded by 4 segments of steel tubes. The length overall of the test specimen is determined by considering the assembly height of the test machine. And the length of each segment is reasonably designed so as to investigate the strength of all the three girth-welds along the specimen availably.
