He infused his own features into De Montaigne^s essays and created formal essay which reflected the characteristics of that age and advocated the spirit of reason. Bacons essays cast the early system of this form. By the 19th century, some people like Addison brought the essay into the daily life, and on the base of this kind of essay, Charles Lamb broke up the gap between “reality and “fiction^ and made “informal essay closer to common people. So Bacon and Lambs essays are the representatives of the two different styles. This paper presents an analytical comparison of Bacon and Lamb^s essays to get the differences between the rational essay in period of Renaissance and the essay that emphasized individualism and emotion in Romantic period, or the serious formal essays and flexible informal essays. In order to convince readers, the author will select some suitable examples from BacorTs Essays and Lambs the Essays of Elia. This paper will be presented in four parts. The first part is an introduction which comprehensively states the form of essay, the purpose of this paper and some other studies about this in China and foreign countries. The second part generally introduces Bacon, Lamb and their essays. The third part is the core of this paper. It will specifically analyze backgrounds and compare differences between Bacon and Lambs essays in content, writing style and language. The conclusion of this paper summarizes the analysis on Essays and the Essays of Elia, explains the significance of making this thesis and discusses the influence these two essayists have made on later generation.
