Cross-cultural Communication When people have western food in formal situation, a lot of them don’t know how to start facing all kinds of knives and forks in different sizes, and they can only learn from the friends nearby to avoid making mistakes. The knife-and-fork etiquette will be introduced in the following. 4. What is the right setting way of knife and fork? What is the right way to have soup? What is the correct way to have salad? What is the right way to have meat such as steak? * II. Cross-cultural Communication Tips The setting way of knife and fork for western meals has several basic principles. Generally speaking, the forks should be put on the left of the plate, and the knives on the right; the table spoon (soup spoon) should be set on the right of the knives, and the sequence of using the knives and forks is from outside to inside. That is to say, the forks should be taken from the leftmost first, and the using of knives or spoons should begin with the rightmost. * II. Cross-cultural Communication Tips When you have the soup, the suggestion is that you should use the spoon to ladle the soup from inside to outside. You should put the spoon on the right of the mat when you finish the soup, and if there is no mat, you can put it in the empty bowl. As for the way how to have salad, you should use the fork usually on the leftmost, which is smaller than the meat fork.
