TEXT B Notes 3. John Kay was a clockmaker from Warrington, Lancashire, England known for the scandal associated with the invention of the spinning frame in 1767: an important stage in the development of textile manufacturing in the Industrial Revolution (he constructed the first known frame, and is one of the claimants to having been its inventor). He is sometimes confused with the unrelated John Kay who invented the flying shuttle thirty years earlier. 4. Abraham Darby I (14 April 1678 – 8 March 1717) was the first, and most famous, of three generations with that name in an English Quaker family that played an important role in the Industrial Revolution. He developed a method of producing pig iron in a blast furnace fuelled by coke rather than charcoal. This was a major step forward in the production of iron as a raw material for the Industrial Revolution. TEXT B Notes 5. Coalbrookdale is a village in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, England, containing a settlement of great significance in the history of iron ore smelting. This is where iron-ore was first smelted by Abraham Darby using easily mined coking coal. The coal was drawn from drift mines in the sides of the valley. As it contained far fewer impurities than normal coal, the iron it produced was of a superior quality. Along with many other industrial developments that were going on in other parts of the country, this discovery was a major factor in the growing industrialisation of Britain, which was to become known as the Industrial Revolution. Today, Coalbrookdale is home to the Ironbridge Institute, a partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust offering postgraduate and professional development courses in heritage. 6. Abraham Darby II (12 May 1711 – 31 March 1763) was the second Abraham Darby in three generations of an English Quaker family that played a role in the period leading up to the Industrial Revolution. He was born in Coalbrook
