* * Observation Skills One sure method to make progress toward eliminating those unsafe acts and conditions is effective observation, which will require three skill areas: Notice safe and unsafe acts, conditions, and work practices. This involves honing your observation skills, adopting a questioning attitude, and tuning in with your senses (for example, becoming aware of noises, odd smells, and vibrations). Talk with workers about your observations and the safety aspects of the workers’ jobs. The most productive observation activity is interactive. You, your employees, your contractors, and any subcontractors can learn a lot by discussing with each other the safety aspects of jobs. Gain workers’ commitment to work safely. Employees will realize the value you place on safety through the interest and concern you show in your safety audits. * * * * * * * * * * * Making the actual observations is only part of the process. Here are the steps in the process that we use: 1. Schedule the safety tour. This establishes the observation activity as important and gives you time to plan. 2. Observe people in the workplace. 3. Talk with workers. Unless the activity involves meaningful discussions between the observers and the people being observed, the process loses much of the desired impact on safety in the workplace. Comment on safe behavior. Point out observations of unsafe acts or conditions. Discuss ways to do the job more safely. Ask the workers about their safety concerns. Get agreement to work safely. Thank the worker. 4. Document the safety tour findings. You will use this information to establish standards, communicate with employees, plan corrective action, and track trends in the program. 5. Follow up. Without follow-up and corrective action, your observation work is not complete. If you can achieve the goal of having all employees take responsibility for safety in their areas, it will be clear who should follow up on safety findings—the workers themselves. 行为安
