This brochure exam ines the work of a team of in dustrial desig ners in their quest to desig n the Volvo Con structi on Equip ment excavator of the 2020s. With the corporate values at the core of the desig n philosophy, the end result-the SfinX excavator —is a symbol not only of Volvo s adn ced tech no logical thinking, but also of where the compa ny wants to go in its search for product excellence and customer in timacy. 2THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME uct PortfoliorodidSfinX: guardian of the future uct Portfoliorodid The SfinX project was the brain child of Volvo CE Adva need Engin eeri ng departme nt. Work ing closely with Swedish in dustrial desig n house, “ Prospective Desig n ” and Volvo Group s Tech no logy Cen tre, the team talked to operators about what features they would like to see on new machines. In addition, the designers also looked outside of the construction in dustry to search for emerge nt tech no logies that could have applicatio ns suitable to con structi on equipme nt. The automotive and aerospace sectors provided rich pick in gs, as did laboratories and uni versities. The excavator was chose n as the subject of the research, as this is the most competitive sector of the con structi on equipme nt market, and also the most popular piece. The SfinX team was not taking the easy option. While still recog ni zable as an excavator, almost every comp onent has bee n radically altered.
