Unit 6 Teaching Pronunciation The main points in this unit: Some ideas about: 1. the role of pronunciation 2. The goal of teaching pronunciation 3. Aspects of pronunciation Teaching skills in: 1. practicing sounds 2. practicing stress and intonation Pronunciation Questionnaire Do Task 1. (p90-91): Discuss the statements in groups and share your ideas in class. There have been two different views on teaching pronunciation in China. Which do you agree more? 1. Pronunciation is of great importance. If a child cannot learn correct pronunciation at the beginning, he/she will not learn correct English well. 2. We learn English for communication. So correct pronunciation is not very important if others can understand your words Some ideas about the role of pronunciation: 1. pronunciation is an essential part of the English language 2. Chinese students need a certain degree of focus on pronunciation. 3. Don’t teach pronunciation as phonetics. 4. Phonetic rules are helpful but not suitable for beginners. 5. Stress and intonation are as important as the sounds themselves. More ideas: 1. pronunciation is extremely important to Chinese students because it is regarded as the face for an English speaker. Good pronunciation provides one with confidence, strength and motivation to use English in front of others. 2. pronunciation learning should be combined with vocabulary, so learning to read and write phonetic transcripts of words and understanding phonetic rules are both very useful. Some ideas about the goal of teaching pronunciation: 1. our goal is not to require Ss to have a native-like pronunciation due to 3 reasons: A. critical period (Benneberg 1967) B. the amount of exposure to English C. the physiological differences Can you think of some more reasons? the variety of world Englishes the communication purpose The Critical Period Hypothesis: if human don’t learn a foreign language before a certain age, then due to changes such as maturation
