;The present perfect progressive: 1. shows that an event, activity or situation that began recently, or in the past, and continues to the present. Colin has been raking the leaves for hours.;2. can be used to describe an event, activity or situation that began in the past and ended only a short time ago. John has been playing the guitar all morning, and now his fingers hurt. 3. is often used to answer the questions How long? or Since when? I have been teaching English since 1963. Paul has been speaking English for five years.;Some verbs are not used in the present perfect progressive tense. These are the stative verbs that do not describe motion or activity: be / have (possess) / hear / know / like / love / prefer / recognize / see / suppose / understand / want / wish These verbs are used in the present perfect simple, not the progressive. Joey has known Janice since 1989. (not has been knowing);The present perfect progressive tense answers the questions How long? and Since when?, but not How many/much? For these, we use the present perfect simple. Bob has been playing chess three times a week since 1987. Bob has played chess three times this week. (not has been playing) ;The general rule for construction of the present perfect progressive tense is: has/have + been + verb + -ing The dog has been chasing the mailman. In negative statements, not is put immediately after has/have and before been. Mrs. Thompson has not been teaching for very long.;In questions, the subject and has/have change places. Statement: The two boys have been looking for the lost ring. Question: Have the two boys been looking for the lost ring?;Present perfect progressive tense describes an action that began in the past, continues in the present, and may continue into the future. This tense is formed by using has/have been and the present participle of the verb (the verb form ending in -ing).
