【Ab stract】 O b ec tive To assess the effects of 20% ethanol use in LASEK on corneal w oun
healing. M ethod s Forty-eigh t eyes from 24 rabbits w ere eepithelialize by two techn iques. The
epithelium w ere etache w ith either 20% ethanol (app lie for 30 secon s)orm echanical scraping, then
ab late was perform e . The num ber of superficial strom al keratocytes w as coun te an the m orphologic
changesw ere observe . Expression of TGF-β1 an bFGF mRNAs w as etecte an analyze by reverse
transcrip tion-polym erase chain reaction an mi m unocytochem ical metho s at 1, 7, 30 an 90 ays after the
surgery. R esu lts One ay after the surgery, the expression of TGF-β1 an bFGF in the keratocytes in both
treate groupsw as lower than that of the norm al controls. Seven ays after the su rgery, the expression of
TGF-β1 an bFGF in both treate groups w as greater than that of the norm al con trols (P0.01). The
expression in the alcoho-l treate group w as greater than that of the surgica-l treate group (P0.01). The
