How would you interpret the last line of the story? Setting The particular time and place in which an event occurs and characters exists constitutes the basic sense of setting. The traditional stories reveal much about the physical aspect of the setting. Setting need not always be realistic, or physical, depending on the author’s intention in effecting the purpose of the story. Setting sometimes involves more that the particular time and place, it might include the very substance of the region---- the customs, life styles, prejudices or the whole atmosphere. As a total environment, very often the setting generates more complex ideas and gives shape to the time and plot, thus analysis of setting in relation to character and action is always revealing. Also there are many other stories in which the setting and action are indispensable of each other as in the case of the naturalistic story and the horror story. In some others, setting may even dominate action and character and has a larger significance in the expression of a given theme. Point of view The author’s selection of a narrator, the angle from which the story is narrated , or the author’s vision through which we view the characters and the action .
