Her prose style is critically acclaimed. The paper takes the symbolic image as the breakthrough point, discussing and interpreting the symbols in the Prelude. Key words: Katherine Mansfield; Prelude; symbolic image; female image On the Symbolic Meaning of Images in Prelude 1 Introduction 1.1 Life and Work of Katherine Mansfield Katherine Mansfield’s whole life is short but brilliant. Mansfield was born in a rich family in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand on October 14th, 1888. Her father was a wealthy merchant who became the chairman of the Bank of New Zealand by his hard work in the end. Though her mother was a housewife, she took little care of the five daughters and one son. It was her grandmother who gave these children the warmth of home. Their parents focused much on the kids’ education. In 1898, Mansfield was enrolled at Wellington High School with her two sisters, where she showed her writing talent and published her first story in the High School Reporter. For providing better education and stronger European cultural influence to these talented daughters, Mr. Beauchamp sent the three girls to Queen’s college in At that time, feminism movement prevailed in England. Mansfield was gradually influenced by the atmosphere and became more and more independent.
