How should accidents be investigated: From the start of 1998, Total Reportable Occupational Illness Frequency (TROIF) became a key performance indicator to be reported quarterly for company employees. TROIF increased from 5.1 in 1997 to an EP average 7.5 in 1998 (Figure 2.1). This was partly a result of an increased number of cases reported by OUs in the Far East caused by the haze problem, and partly improved identification and reporting of occupational illness in other OUs. Commonly reported work-related occupational illnesses include infectious diseases, stress and repeated trauma (mainly back pain and repetitive strain injury). Whilst awareness and reporting of occupational health has improved, difficulties still exist in distinguishing whether an illness is caused by working conditions or from other causes. This should improve as experience with occupational health reporting evolves.
