(2) On19February2016,thecompetentfoodassessmentbodyofFrancei ssueditsinitialassessmentreport.Inthatreportitcametotheconclusio nthatL-ergothioneinemeetsthecriteriafornovelfoodingredientseto utinArticle3(1)ofRegulation(EC)No258/97. (3) On9March2016,theCommissionforwardedtheinitialassessmentre porttotheotherMemberStates. (4) ReasonedobjectionswereraisedbyotherMemberStateswithinthe60 -dayperiodlaiddowninthefirstsubparagraphofArticle6(4)ofRegul ation(EC)No258/97. (5) On14October2016,theCommissionconsultedtheEuropeanFoodSa fetyAuthority( ‘ EFSA ’ )askingittocarryoutanadditionalassess mentforL-ergothioneineasnovelfoodingredientinaccordancewith Regulation(EC)No258/97. (6) On26October2016,EFSAinits ‘ ScientificOpiniononthesafetyofL-ergothioneineasanovelfoodp ursuanttoRegulation(EC)No258/97 ’ (2)concludedthatL-ergothioneineissafefortheproposedusesandus elevels. (7) ThatopiniongivessufficientgroundstoestablishthatL-ergothionein eintheproposedusesanduselevelscomplieswiththecriterialaiddow ninArticle3(1)ofRegulation(EC)No258/97. (8) Directive2002/46/ECoftheEuropeanParliamentandoftheCouncil( 3)laysdownrequirementsonfoodsupplement
