In 2002, Chinas National Statistical Bureau and the Ministry of Information Industry carried out a joint study on the Chinese software industry. This study is divided into three sections: an overview of the Chinese software market, an examination of the existing problems in the sector, and hopes and expectations for the future. I. China Software Market Overview By 2002 China had 4700 software companies (of a certain scale), employing 590,000 employees. The revenue generated from software and system integration amounted to RMB 110 billion (US$13.3 billion), up 46.5% on a year earlier, with exports up 100% to US$1.5 billion. The number of Chinese software companies increased dramatically last year, from only 1270 in 2001 to 4700 in 2002. q The number of those companies with revenue over RMB 10 million (US$1.2 million) increased by 398 to 1100 companies, or 23% of the total. q The number of companies with revenue over RMB 50 million (US$6 million) increased by 168 to 368 companies, or 8% of the total. q The number of companies with revenue over RMB 100 million (US$12 million) increased by 117 to 214 companies, or 4.5% of the total. The overall sales revenue from the software and system integration increased dramatically last year as well, up 46.5% to RMB 110 billion (US$13.3 billion).
