Teaching aims
To guide the students to read and get some information from the text
To help the students to learn to describe some mysterious things in our world
Step 1 Warming up by talking about Lake Tianchi and its monster (3minutes)
Ask the students to look at some pictures of Lake Tianchi and share some information about it , and then use another picture to bring in the topic The Monster of Lake Tianchi and arouse the students’ interest.
Step 2 Fast reading
1) Ask the students to read the beginning of the text and decide where the text comes from. (individual work, 2minutes)
A tourist guide
A newspaper
A dictionary
A scientific journal
Then check the answer : B
2) Then ask the students to go through the text quickly and find a sentence from the text which shows the main idea of it. Then check the answer (individual work, 3minutes).
Answer: The “monster of Lake Tianchi” in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province , northeast China, is back in the news after several recent sightings.
Step 3 Reading for details
1) Ask the students to read the text carefully and answer the following questions. Then check the answers one by one.
① How many sightings of the monster does the article report?
② Who saw the monster clearly, and why?
③ Which description of the monster is most detailed?
④ When was the monster first sighted?
⑤ What do many people think about the monster?
⑥ What do scientists think about the monster?
Answers:
① Three. ( Para. 1, 2 and 3.)
② Li Xiaohe and his family. Because the weather was fine and the lake was calm. (Line 8 Para. 3 )
③ The soldiers’ description . (Para. 2)
④ Since the beginning of the last century. (Line 2 Para. 4)
