James contributed significantly to literary criticism, particularly in his insistence that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in presenting their views of the world. T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) T.S. Eliot published The Waste Land in 1922. Eliot was an American poet, playwright and critic who lived in England from 1915. Pearl Buck (1892-1973) Pearl Buck spent most of her time until 1934 in China. Her novel The Good Earth was the best-selling fiction book in the US in 1930s. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces”. William Faulkner (1897-1962) William Faulkner won Nobel Prize in 1949. Faulkner’s fame and acclaim stem from his novels, novellas, and short stories. He was, however, a published poet and a sometime screenwriter as well. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Hemingway won Nobel Prize in 1954. His fiction was successful because the characters he presented exhibited authenticity that resonated with his audience. Many of his works are classics of American literature.
