Lesson 4FPGA I/O
Configuring FPGA I/O
FPGA I/O Palettes
I/O Types
A. Configuring FPGA I/O
B. FPGA I/O Palettes
Using FPGA I/O Nodes
Two ways to use FPGA I/O
Drag and drop from the Project Explorer
Drop empty I/O node on block diagram. Left-click and select I/O.
C. I/O Types
Digital lines – writes/reads Boolean value to/from digital line
Digital Ports – writes/reads unsigned 8-bit integer value to/from digital port (grouping of 8 digital lines)
Analog I/O – writes/reads 16-bit integer value to/from analog channel
Flexible Digital I/O
Example Finder: Toolkits and Modules » FPGA » Fundamentals » Counters
Creating a custom counter
Minimum input pulse width detectable depends on loop period
Binary Conversion for Analog I/O
When performing analog I/O, the voltage must be converted from a binary value to a nominal value on the host
The binary conversion factor depends on the resolution of the board
Nominal Value versus Binary Value
Nominal Value: ±10 Volts
Binary Value:
Range of board or module:
2^16 bits =65536 bits
10–(–10)Volts=20V
65536/20=32768
0V = 32767 Binary
–10V = 0 Binary
10V = 65535 Binary
Summary
Configure I/O nodes through the Project Explorer or the block diagram
Digital I/O can be configured using lines or ports
Digital lines may be used to implement more advanced I/O such as counters or PWMs
Convert analog I/O from binary to nominal voltage on the host
