Argumentative Paragraph Writing
Grammar Lesson Class 1, Grade 2

Analysis of students’ level of skills:
My students have made some progress in sentence making in the past few months. However, they still have problem with paragraph writing, especially the argumentative writing. They’ve no idea what to write and how to organize their ideas to strengthen their point of view.
Teaching Aims:
This lesson serves to familiarize students with some strategies of writing an argumentative paragraph and enables them to try writing a persuasive and logical one.
Students are expected to be able to observe samples and useful patterns and then write in limited time and check in class.
Students are expected to develop their thinking logicality and fluency.
Important and difficult points:
More emphasis should be laid on strategies of supporting an argument and some useful expressions. And students may have difficulty putting what they’ve learned into use and imitating writing a logical and persuasive paragraph.
Teaching methods:
Task-based Language Teaching Approach.
Teaching aids:
PowerPoint, student’s handout.
Teaching Procedures Step I. Lead-in
Students study a sample argumentative paragraph and find out how it is organized. A sample paragraph:
In my view, working as a volunteer is a good way to improve young people ’s sense of social responsibility. First of all, working as a volunteer is a big challenge to youth, for it provides them chances to engage in various activities, such as serving the elderly, educating the illiterate and preserving the environment. When they find they really can be of some help to others, they’ll become more confident of their abilities. Also, there is a widespread proverb, “a good exercise for the heart is bending down and helping someone to get up ”, which means that by offering help, young people touch the lives of others and enrich their own.
