Gowanus CanaldlandstudioCONSERVANCY醐，Hl道？ph dlandstudioGowanus CanalNYSCASITE: The Gowanus Canal is a hidden landmark in Brooklyn, New York that is a valuable asset to the local and broader community. Formerly a wetland creek, the canal is bordered by industrial buildings and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The canal gives character and history to the surrounding neighborhoods, yet public access to the waters edge is currently limited to publicly-owned streets that terminate at the canal. The physical condition of the bulkhead has been neglected and combined sewer outfall overflows and street surface runoff regularly drain directly into the canal. Industrial activities in the area have polluted the surrounding soil and canal bed, introducing industrial toxins to the water. In 1999 local government agencies addressed the pollution issues by reactivating the Gowanus Flushing Tunnel and the Gowanus Pump Station at the head of the canal and also plan for additional clean-up and dredging projects in the future. Recent plans for rezoning of areas adjacent to the water, as well as the increased demand for real estate in this part of Brooklyn have spurred sporadic private development projects, and although these plans provide access to the waterfront within their immediate sites, they do not present a unified plan for the development of a publicly accessible open space system for the canal as a whole. In order to provide public access to potential recreational spaces along the canal and to improve the soil and water quality, the SPONGE PARK? was invented.GOALS: The SPONGE PARK? is designed as a series of public urban waterfront spaces that slow, absorb and filter surface water runoff with the intended goal of cleaning up the contaminated canal water, activating the canal edge and communicating a larger vision for stewardship of the environment to a community with many competing voices, agendas and concerns.SIZE: The Gowanus Canal is 100’ wide and 1.4 miles long fro
