Childrens fascination with computers is not guaranteed
to last. The Internet can be frustrating for kids if steps
are not taken to ensure that they know how to use it.

cybernetics n. 控制论;1 Giving a child a computer and a powerful modem will
enable him or her to access the valuable information
that cyberspace has to offer and thus zoom ahead of
his/her peers. Or so parents have been persuaded to
believe. But doubts are creeping in.;2 Expensive computing equipment (that children were excited by for a while) is often left to gather dust. Children describe feeling bored and frustrated by the Internet. They waste time surfing the ‘Net’ and don’t know what to do when they get error messages. ‘I used to spend hours browsing but I hardly ever found anything suitable for my age group,’ says 12 year Mark Rutherford. Many other children complain that most sites are aimed at adults.;3 Harriet Jones, 11, described another common problem. ‘Even’ when I find something interesting, I don t know how to save it or print it out.’ It seems that even when young users find potentially interesting information, they havent a clue what to do with it or how to use it in any constructive way. Parents comment that the Internet is just not user-friendly for children.;4 Computers have become like discarded toys in many homes. The picture is familiar, isnt it? You buy an exciting play things for your children and if they dont know how to use them, they, play for a while and then get bored. The key here is guidance. The Internet can only be useful for most children if they know how to use it. ‘Chil
