If the water content of the steam by weight is 10%, then the steam is said to be 90% dry and has a dryness fraction of 0.9 and therefore and actual enthalpy of evaporation (heat energy) of the steam is not the hfg value shown in the steam tables, but is the product of the dryness fraction x hfg. c. Cleanliness Dirt in any steam system can have as its source, carryover of solids from the boiler water due to incorrect boiler operation pipe scale, welding slag, excess jointing material badly applied to screwed and flanged pipe joints. All these unwanted substances are detrimental to the efficient operation of any steam system. Excess treatment compound from the boiler will deposit itself on the heat transfer surfaces and reduce the rate of heat transmission. Pipe scale and other foreign matter can interfere with the operation of control valves and steam traps. The essential protection against such pipe dirt is the installation of pipeline strainers to protect such equipment. It must be said that protection from the carryover of treatment compound can hardly be achieved using a line strainer, but the use of an in line separator can be applied. This is again dealt with fully in the training package Steam Trapping.
