Introduction
In recent years, the number of international students studying in China has increased significantly, as has the number of Chinese students studying abroad. English has become an essential communication tool among these students, and writing argumentative essays is an essential part of their academic training. Therefore, the proper use of connecting words is crucial in writing an effective argumentative essay. This study aims to explore the differences and similarities in the use of connecting words between Chinese and international students in their English argumentative essays.
Methodology
The corpus for this study consists of 100 argumentative essays written by Chinese and international students from universities in China and abroad. To ensure comparability, the essays were selected from the same course or subject area and were of similar length. The essays were analyzed using the software AntConc, and the frequency of connecting words was tabulated and analyzed using the chi-square test.
Results
The initial findings show that both Chinese and international students used connecting words in their essays, but the frequency and types of connecting words varied. Chinese students tended to use more conjunctions, such as “and,” “but,” and “or,” while international students used more transitional phrases, such as “however,” “in addition,” and “furthermore.” The Chi-square test confirmed that the difference in the use of connecting words between Chinese and international students was statistically significant.
Discussion
This study suggests that the difference in the use of connecting words between Chinese and international students may be attributed to cultural and educational differences. Chinese students may have been taught a more formulaic approach to writing, while international students may have been trained to adopt a more nuanced and sophisticated approach.
