Between1863and1869，asmanyas20，000Chineseworkershelpedbuildthedangerouswesternpartoftherailroad，awindingribbonoftrackknownastheCentralPacificRailroad.Atfirst，theCentralPacificRailroadsdirectorswantedawhitesonlyworkforce.Whennotenoughwhitemensignedup，therailroadbeganhiringChinesemenforthebackbreakinglabor.Companyleaderswereskepticalofthenewrecruitsabilitytodothework，buttheyprovedthemselvesnotonlycapablebutevensuperiortotheotherworkers.

Chineseworkerscutthroughdenseforests，filleddeepnarrowsteepsidedvalleys，constructedlongtrestles(高架桥)andbuiltenormousretainingwalls(挡土墙)—someofwhichremaincompleteandundamagedtoday.Allworkwasdonebyhandusingcarts，shovelsandpicksbutnomachinery.However，progresscameatgreatcost：anestimated1，200ChineselaborersdiedalongtheCentralPacificRailroad.
