FanwasborninBeijingonJuly9,1938.HerfatherwasagraduateofTsinghuaUniversityandhadastronginterestinChineseclassicalartandculture.

Influencedbyherfather,Fanlikedvisitingmuseumswhenshewasinmiddleschool.WiththegreatloveofChineseculture,shestudiedinthearchaeologydepartmentinPekingUniversityandgraduatedin1963.ThenshestartedworkingatDunhuangandhasworkedthereeversince.Shespendsalmost60yearstakingcareofDunhuang.Peoplecallherthe“DaughterofDunhuang.”

OnMay4,2023,“DaughterofDunhuang”FanJinshireturnedtoPekingUniversityandbroughtback10millionRMBdonationstosetuptheFanJinshiEducationFund(基金)tosupporttheresearchofDunhuangStudiesatPekingUniversity.
