Introduction

Ethyleneglycol,alsoknownasethane-1,2-diolorglycol,isaclear,odorless,andcolorlessliquid.Itisahighlyversatilechemicalthatisusedinavarietyofindustrial,commercial,andconsumerproducts.Ethyleneglycolisprimarilyusedasarawmaterialintheproductionofpolyesterfibersandresins,aswellasinantifreezesolutionsandheattransferfluids.Ethyleneglycolisclassifiedasahazardouschemicalduetoitspotentialhealtheffectsonhumansandtheenvironment.

HazardsIdentification

Ethyleneglycolisjustlikeotherhazardouschemicalsandposesaserioushazardtohumanhealthaswellastheenvironmentifhandledorusedinappropriately.Ethyleneglycolistoxicwheningested,inhaled,orabsorbedthroughtheskin.Ingestionofethyleneglycolcanleadtosevereneurologicalandcardiovascularsymptoms,includingbraindamage,seizures,andcardiacarrest.Inhalationofethyleneglycolvaporcanleadtorespiratoryirritation,headaches,anddizziness.Long-termexposuretoethyleneglycolmaycausechronichealtheffects,includingkidneydamage,liverdamage,anddevelopmentalproblemsinchildren.
